School Principal
Welcome Message
Greetings Jewel Sumner Middle School Parents, Students, and Community,
It is my pleasure to continue to serve you as principal of JSMS. My name is Ashley Walker, and this is my 19th year in educational leadership. I have previously served in other capacities such as Teacher, Instructional Facilitator, Coordinator of a district 21st Century Community Learning Program, Assistant Principal, and Principal at other area schools. I earned my B.A. in Arts and Sciences from Louisiana State University, my M.Ed. +30 at Southeastern Louisiana University, and am currently pursuing my EdD at the University of Southern Mississippi. I value lifelong learning and strive to serve as an example for our students and learning community at JSMS.
Our vision at JSMS is “to prepare our students to be college and career ready by instilling in them critical thinking skills and problem solving skills, and a global perspective in which they demonstrate the core values of being respectful, compassionate, and great.” I encourage you to visit our Mission and Vision Page to learn more about our expectations and goals for the future. We seek to ensure that every student at JSMS sets challenging goals for themselves with our goal being to help them meet and exceed theirs.
Our faculty and staff are prepared for the challenge of continued growth and learning. Many of our teachers are trained Louisiana State Department of Education Content Leaders, many are currently participating in professional development to expand their knowledge of teaching and learning, and some are enrolled in higher degree programs.
My goal is to continue to work with all stakeholders to improve student achievement. We aspire to provide our students with more academic opportunities, more clubs that are of interest to students, more opportunities for student engagement both socially and academically, and more athletic opportunities. One example from the 20-21 school year of our aim to provide more for our students was our Algebra I class for eligible 8th graders. We had 13 students complete the course, and all 13 earned their high school credit after LEAP 2025 testing.
Again, I am so proud to continue to serve the JSMS community. If you have any questions or needs, know that you can reach me at the school at 985-310-2152, on my cell at 985-514-0337, or at ashley.walker@tangischools.org via email.
Go Cowboys!
